# Token (Cryptocurrency)

**Tokens**, also known as **cryptocurrency**, are ownable digital assets secured by [blockchain technology](/aphid-ai-docs/glossary/blockchain.md).

**Tokens** are most often used to as a way to gain access to tools, services, games, and groups.

**Token** usage examples:

* Aphid users can stake [BION](/aphid-ai-docs/glossary/bion-token.md) tokens to access [Environments](/aphid-ai-docs/glossary/environment.md)
* Staking ETH tokens is required to become a validator of the Ethereum blockchain
* Staking BRIGHT tokens grants access to the [Bright DAO](https://gardens.1hive.org/#/xdai/garden/0x1e2d5fb385e2eae45bd42357e426507a63597397/covenant)
* In El Salvador, bitcoin (BTC) tokens are recognized as a national currency, so BTC can be spent on food, clothes, mortgages, medical bills, and taxes
