# Web3

**Web3 technology** is synonymous with blockchain technology.

#### Web1 vs. Web2 vs. Web3

The term **"web3"** refers to how blockchain technology is the next upgrade to the traditional internet.

* **web1 = LAN** - the original way computers communicated with each other was via local area network (LAN) connections. This is how people throw "LAN parties" - they play games with each other on different computers, within the same building.
* **web2 = Internet** - in 1983, computers around the world were connected to each other via the internet, which allows computers to share information with each other.
* **web3 = Blockchain** - in 2009, computers around the world began joining the bitcoin blockchain, which allows computers to verify information with each other.
